How much are calls to the Republic of Ireland?

Hi Simon, I am currently with TalkTalk and am considering switching to the Primus home phone package.

I live in Northern Ireland and make a lot of calls to the Republic of Ireland. These are treated as national calls by TalkTalk and also by BT, so therefore are included with their package. Would Primus treat them in the same way? And if not, how much do these calls cost?

Many thanks,

John Mulvenna, Northern Ireland, via email, Updated: Wednesday 18 January, 2012

Our expert says...

Dear John, thanks for your email to Homephonechoices.co.uk about switching to Primus and calls to the Republic of Ireland.

By signing up to our exclusive line rental deal with Primus, you’ll be able to considerably reduce your home phone bills. The Primus Home Phone Saver deal costs just £7.99 a month for unlimited evening and weekend calls to local and national landlines, and line rental.

Unfortunately calls to the Republic of Ireland aren’t included within the calling plan, and are charged per minute as an international call. Please have a look at the call rates for Primus and a few other providers below:

Making cheap international calls

Because calls to the Republic of Ireland are considered to be international calls by most providers, it may be worth switching to a provider that offers free international calls or discounted rates.

You should consider:

  • YourCalls.net - The Golden Destination deal from YourCalls.net lets you pick one country that you call the most often to receive a discount on rates. For example, if you pick Ireland as your Golden Destination, calls to Ireland will be reduced from 3.2p per minute at all times to 1.75p a minute during the day, 1.36p a minute in the evenings and just 1.3p per minute at weekends.
  • VoIP - Another way to make cheap international calls is to use your broadband connection to talk over the internet. Known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), providers such as Vonage and Skype allow you to make international calls for free if the person you’re calling has the same service.

For more information on reducing the cost of international calls, please read our guide Making cheap international calls.

I hope this helps answer your question about calls to the Republic of Ireland John. If you want to find a dialling code for any country, you can use our International Dialling Code Finder.
