If you’re looking for the cheapest way to use your home phone, there are many options on offer, including VoIP and pre-fix services. (Updated 8/10/09)
If you’re willing to spend a little time searching and comparing the home phone market for the best deals, you’ll be able to save loads of money on your monthly phone bills.
As well as cutting the cost of your line rental, here are some options you may not have thought of:
Some home phone providers work by giving you a pre-fix number (sometimes called CPS) to dial before your calls. As long as you’re registered with the company, you can use this number to save money and you’ll be billed for your calls by that company.
It’s possible to mix and match pre-fixes, so you may be able to find one provider that will give you a pre-fix for cheap local calls, and one that’s better for national calls. You can also leave out the pre-fix to dial via BT, but remember this will be shown on your BT bill, not on your pre-fix supplier’s bill.
Phone cards can save you money, and they’re particularly useful if you’re calling from outside your home, saving you lots of money on your mobile bill. They’re also pretty good for cheap international calls.
VoIP (Voice-over Internet Protocol) is a way of making phone calls through your broadband connection on your computer.
With a VoIP connection, you can make free calls to other people with the same provider, all over the world, or cheap calls to normal landlines. Check out VoIP supplier Vonage (www.vonage.co.uk), with packages starting at only £4.99 a month.
International calls are often the biggest drain on a household’s phone bill. If you have friends or family living abroad, the right provider could shave 90% off your bill, so choose wisely. Use the Homephonechoices.co.uk price comparison service to find cheaper international call rates for the countries you call.
