New phone line options

You will either need to have a new phone line installed in your home, or connect an existing phone line to your local BT exchange. If a new phone line needs to be installed, BT will usually take up to 16 business days, subject to an engineer's visit and availability. If you simply need to get re-connected, BT should only take around 4 business days.

Phone line connection charges

A £124.99 connection charge may apply for new lines, but most people don't have to pay this. A connection charge typically applies when there's no suitable BT line available in your property, no dialling tone on the line, or if you have been disconnected in the past for non-payment.

However, it's likely you won't need to pay the charge if your home has had a telephone service from BT in the recent past, the wiring and socket is undamaged and you can hear a dialling tone on the line. A BT engineer will let you know whether or not the connection charge applies to your property before you complete your order, so you can always change your mind in time.

Other telephone providers such as TalkTalk and Virgin Media offer alternatives with the following connection charges:

  • Virgin Media (www.Virginmedia.com) charges just £35 for new phone line connections. Plus you can usually keep your phone number when you switch to Virgin.
  • TalkTalk (www.Talktalk.co.uk) charges only £59 for new line installations. TalkTalk bundles its line rental and calls with broadband.

My daughter has just moved to a house which has had a BT line, she was told she would have to pay £122 connection fee because it would need a new box, wiring etc.however they have tested the line, and it is working, and is able to ring out and except calls in.The engineer still is insisting she will have to pay connection, but since no work has been done, its obvious the line is still connected. Is the BT engineer wrong to insist she pay full fee?She is within her rights to cancel as it has been less than 24 hours. - Nov 23 2009 8:52PM
