Landlines in the begining
British Telecom was privatised in 1984, that was a land mark for the UK’s as it ended BT monopoly and introduced choice in your home for your telephone services. Twenty years later real competition is now available as you can not only switch your calls from BT but also your line rental.
Todays Landline Market
There is serious competition that has entered the landline market and driving down prices for consumers for all services including line rental such as TalkTalk, Toucan, Post Office with even Tesco offering savings for consumers compared to BT.
BT advertises that 100,000 people a month are switching back to its services, but what BT doesn’t tell us is that more than twice as many people are switching to other home phone providers. The main reason is price and the savings that the competition can offer.
However its worth noting that by only comparing landline prices this leaves out a large part of your bills: international, and mobile calls. To accurately work out which tariff really is cheapest, you need to spend a lot of time analysing your call patterns down to which country you make international calls and what mobile networks you call and when.
HomePhoneChoices is about to make this easy for you with our call wizard where you can estimate where, and what mobile you call and we’ll even show you what BT should charge you based upon what you have said. We’ll even ask you if you want to change landline provider. (This service should be available from 2006).
Current Line Rental Offers
Home Phone deals, for landlines where line rental is part of the deal are currently changing monthly with some of the best recent offers from Talk Talk , Toucan and One Tel.
For example in October 2005 you could save £140 a year by switching to TalkTalk from a BT package; this number rises to £290 if you are on BT’s basic package and needed Talk 3. (The numbers are based upon also switching your landline to Talk Talk – as they had a great cash back offer in the month).
If you want the best landline deal then you will have to change your line rental from BT. This is again will provide guaranteed savings. There are only a few companies currently offering to look after your landline for you: TalkTalk, Post Office Home Phone Service and One Tel.
Wholesale line rental is still relatively new and more alternative suppliers to BT are expected to offer land line deals in the near future.
