How do I switch my home phone service?

Dear Simon, I’m thinking of switching my phone service from BT to the special offer from Primus, as recommended by your website. But how do I switch my service? Will I need to get an engineer out to change the phones or wires or anything?

1. Put your full postcode into our postcode checker. As some services are only available in certain areas, we need to know where you live.

2. Tell us what kind of calling plan you’re looking for. Do you want free calls anytime or a bundle that includes broadband and a phone line for example?

3. Click Compare Prices for a list of home phone suppliers and packages available in you’re area.

4. We’ll give you information about line rental and calling features, you just have to find the package that suits you. When you’ve found the provider and calling plan you want, just click GO!

5. You can apply to switch through our site, or go through to the providers’ website instead. Then you’ll just need to fill in a few simple details, such as your name and address, your landline number and how you’d like to pay for your new service. We’ll then take care of everything else, including telling your existing supplier that you’re switching your home phone package.

What happens after I switch?

The whole switching process will take around 14 days, though it varies between suppliers. Usually you can keep your existing phone number when you switch, though if you’re switching to a cable phone line you will probably get a new number.

In most instances you won’t need to have a line installed, so there is no need for an engineer to visit. However if you are switching from a BT copper landline to a cable one with Virgin Media (or vice versa), you will probably need to have a new line installed. It is worth bearing in mind that there is normally a fee for this. Read our guide on phone line installation options for more information.

There shouldn’t be any disruption to your phone service.
