Ofcom to investigate Tesco Telecoms
(06-05-07) - Tesco Telecoms is being investigated by Ofcom, the communications industry regulator, after a string of consumers complained that the company’s services were being mis-sold.
According to Ofcom, the investigation will try to establish whether Tesco Telecoms, the home phone branch of the massive supermarket chain, has “failed to comply with the requirements of its Code of Practice for Sales and Marketing activity and other relevant consumer law”.
The enquiry was opened after a significant number of orders for the Tesco Telecoms service were cancelled using the ‘cancel other’ process. This type of cancellation is only permitted in certain circumstances, including after allegations of mis-selling or where the customer asks their new provider to cancel a request to switch to them, but the provider fails to cancel.
This fits with the complaints Ofcom has received from consumers, who claim that they were mis-sold the Tesco Telecoms fixed line phone service. They also allege that the company has failed to cancel requests to switch to Tesco Telecoms.
The Tesco Telecoms investigation is the latest in a series of enquiries, as Ofcom continues to campaign against mis-selling in the home phone industry.
