The Post Office’s (www.postoffice.co.uk) Home Phone package combines line rental and a competitively-priced call plan, which includes free weekend calls to mobiles and some overseas numbers.

About the Post Office

The Post Office is a brand of The Royal Mail Group plc, which has been providing the UK with postal services for over 350 years. The company recently moved in to the telecoms market, and now offers a home phone package and two broadband and home phone packages.

Unlike other home phone providers, customers who sign-up to a Post Office service can pay their monthly bills in a way which suits them - either by direct debit, over the phone or in a Post Office branch by cash, cheque or direct debit.

What is Post Office home phone?

The Post Office currently offers one basic home phone package which includes both line rental and calls.

Post Office Home Phone - A home phone-only tariff that offers:

The provider also offers two packages that allow you to bundle your home phone and broadband services. These packages include line rental, calls and broadband.

Post Office Home Phone and Broadband Standard - A home phone and broadband tariff that includes:

  • All the benefits of Post Office Home Phone
  • Up to 8Mbps broadband
  • 5GB monthly downloads
  • Free modem

Post Office Home Phone and Broadband Extra - A home phone and broadband tariff that includes:

  • All the benefits of Post Office Home Phone
  • Up to 8Mbps broadband
  • Unlimited monthly downloads
  • Free wireless router

With any of these home phone deals you will receive one monthly bill from the Post Office, and the company will deal with all aspects of your service, including any faults on the line.

Why should I get Post Office home phone?

The Post Office’s home phone package comes with a range of features and has competitive call rates. Ideal for a household that makes most of its calls in the evening and at the weekend, the package is free, all you’ll pay is the cost of the line rental - £12 a month.

You’ll get unlimited free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines, free weekend calls to all UK mobiles, and free weekend calls to 40 top international destinations, including Australia, Portugal, Netherlands, Spain and New Zealand.

The package also includes free calls at anytime to all other Post Office Home Phone customers. And you can nominate 10 of your most frequently called numbers as ‘Loved Ones’ to receive 10% off calls, plus a free 60-minute call on their birthdays and Christmas Day. The nominated numbers can include one international number, one mobile and one 0845 number.

With Post Office Home Phone you do no have to sign-up to a minimum term contract, so you are free to leave at any time after sign-up simply by giving the Post Office two weeks notice or by switching to another supplier which also takes about two weeks. However, customers who also take a broadband package from the Post Office will be tied into a 12-month minimum term contract.

Unlike other providers, you can pay your monthly bills in a way that suits you - by direct debit, over the phone or at your local Post Office branch - and the price is the same whichever payment method you choose, making Post Office home phone an ideal option for those that don’t have a bank account.

What do I need for Post Office home phone?

Switching your home phone service to the Post Office is really simple, and can be done in minutes. If you already have an active phone line, there will be no interruption to service, and you keep the same phone number you currently have. The features you already have, such as caller ID, will stay the same, and you'll also have exactly the same access to the operator and to emergency numbers.

The switch will be carried out at your local telephone exchange, so an engineer won’t need to visit your house, and the Post Office will tell your existing home phone provider that it will be billing you for your line rental, line services and calls in the future.

If you don’t have a phone line, or if you are currently a cable customer (i.e. Virgin Media), the Post Office can arrange and manage the installation of a new line for you. This will cost £112.34 - cheaper than having the line installed by BT. For more details, call the Post Office sales department on 0800 092 0514.

Has anyone had problems using prepaid international calling cards while using a Post Office home telephone? - Dec 7 2011 3:44PM
Hi Brian,

Thank you for getting in touch with Homephoechoices.co.uk.

We are actually a price comparison website not a phone provider - if you wanted to discuss the cost of call rates you would need to get in touch with your provider directly.

As a guide 11p is the standard connection charge for a lot of phone providers, directory enquiry calls have always been expensive as the company you are calling need to make money for the service they are providing.

I'm afraid that the only way to avoid these charges is to switch to a call package that offers free unlimited calls. To view the different call packages available please go to: http://bit.ly/mXqDnT

I hope that helps.

Why do you and all other companies charge over 11p to first connect a call ?. It is virtually all automated so how have you worked out this is "reasonable" and how come nearly all companies charge the same ?

Why are directory enquiry calls so expensive and similar for all companies, over £2 per call in most cases, then a further fee if you want connected on top of the 11p initially ?

Great service over nearly 3 years and have recently added broadband to the package. Love the freedom to call mobiles at the weekend and not to have to pay the quarterly bill by direct debit! - Mar 15 2011 10:15PM

Tried to switch to Post Office from BT back in June. They promised twice it would be done and i am still waiting and its now December. They never called me back and wasted a lot of my time. Quite frankly they have been absolutely disgraceful. They are an embarrassment to British industry and should be closed down. - Dec 21 2010 2:55PM
