Sky increases landline and home phone subscriptions

Home phone provider sees year-on-year rise in both line rental and telephone package sales, despite a drop since last quarter

Sky rented out 212,000 more landlines and gained 147,000 more telephone subscriptions between July and September.

The home phone providers’ latest financial results also show that Sky has sold 678,000 telephone subscriptions and close to one million line rentals in the past 12 months.

This means that Sky’s line rentals have increased by almost a third, to 2.9million, over the last year, while telephone subscriptions grew by 678,000.

However, both line rentals and telephone subscriptions were down on the previous quarter. Between March and June this year, 236,000 subscriptions were taken out, whilst from June to September the figure was down to 185,000.

Sky also announced that 2.9 million of its customers have now bundled their home phone package with broadband and satellite TV - a 29% rise on this time last year.

The provider believes that the benefits its bundles is reflected by “strong customer loyalty,” with the number of existing customers leaving the company remaining stable over the year.

Using local loop unbundling - the process of other providers using the connections running from BT’s telephone exchanges to our houses - Sky has been able to move another 183,000 of its customers onto its own network over the last three months.

“By managing the entire broadband and telephony line we are improving the service to our customers and reducing our cost base,” said Sky.

Sky froze the cost of its home phone subscriptions until at least September 2012 last month. However, the company raised its line rental by £1 to £12.25 in July, although it is still cheaper than BT and Virgin Media.
