BT phone line and calls

If you don't want to sign-up to BT broadband, you can get a BT phone line installed for just £29.99 if you sign-up to a BT calls package. Speak to BT directly though to find out if any charges will apply (you can call BT on 0800 028 4474). Compare BT calling plans below, and visit www.bt.com/new-line for more information.

New phone line options

If you haven't currently got a home phone line, you will need to have one installed or reconnected by a phone line provider. If a new phone line needs to be installed, BT can usually have you up and running within 16 days, subject to an engineer's visit and availability.

If you simply need to get reconnected, this should take BT about four working days.

Phone line connection charges

A £29.99 connection charge will apply for new lines, though this could be less. A connection charge typically applies when there's no suitable BT line available in your property, no dialling tone on the line, or if you have been disconnected in the past for non-payment.

However, it's likely you won't need to pay the charge if your home has had a telephone service from BT in the recent past, the wiring and socket is undamaged and you can hear a dialling tone on the line. A BT engineer will let you know whether or not the connection charge applies to your property before you complete your order, so you can always change your mind in time.

Other telephone providers such as TalkTalk and Virgin Media offer alternatives with the following connection charges:

  • Virgin Media (www.virginmedia.com) charges just £35 for new phone line connections. Plus you can usually keep your phone number when you switch to Virgin Media.
  • TalkTalk (www.talktalk.co.uk) charges only £69.99 for new line installations. TalkTalk bundles its line rental and calls with broadband.

I was with tiscali but talk talk took over and we didnt like their service when we was with them a few years previous..
for nearly a week now i have had no phoneline as there is no dialling tone, talktalk are not really interested and keep sending e-mails saying an engineer will come or call, but doesnt. if there is a problem with the line, as i pay talktalk line rental to BT, is it up to talktalk to sort out, BT or me, also if i changed to yourselves and there is a problem with the line would i get billed? thanks

My daughter has just moved to a house which has had a BT line, she was told she would have to pay £122 connection fee because it would need a new box, wiring etc.however they have tested the line, and it is working, and is able to ring out and except calls in.The engineer still is insisting she will have to pay connection, but since no work has been done, its obvious the line is still connected. Is the BT engineer wrong to insist she pay full fee?She is within her rights to cancel as it has been less than 24 hours. - Nov 23 2009 8:52PM
