Are there any alternatives to BT for a phone line in a new build property?

Are there any alternatives to BT for a phone line in a new build property?

Dear Simon, I am just about to move into a newly built house. It has BT points installed, but can any company take it over? I was always under the impression that as they are BT points, only BT could install/connect the phone line.

However, when trying to arrange Sky digital TV for the property, I was told Sky could connect our phone and then our line rental would be with them. Is this possible? I was even more confused once I got off the phone!

Hello Sharon, this is a really good question, and one that frequently gets sent into Homephonechoices.co.uk.

Many people are under the impression that when you move into a new house, BT (www.bt.com) has to connect your phone line, and you must sign-up to a minimum contract for your calls with them. However, BT is not the only home phone provider that can install lines - there are a number of alternatives.

* All providers allow you to select a convenient appointment on a suitable date when you place your order online. However, line setup times will typically depend on the availability of an engineer, and other factors, such as the number of concurrent line installations in your area.

Read our guide to phone line installation options for more information and a quick overview of which providers can install your landline.

If you’re moving into a new build house you don’t have to sign-up to BT either, even if the phone points in your house are BT points. Read more information below…

Line installation alternatives to BT

Even if the phone points in your new house are BT points, you don’t necessarily have to sign-up to a contract with BT or have your line installed by them.

If it’s a brand new property you will need to check if the developers have a prior agreement with a telephone provider for set-up. If the developers have only provided the wiring and connection boxes in the home then in most cases you’ll be free to choose who installs the line and who you take your calls with.

BT currently charges £130 for standard phone line installation, but there are alternatives - especially if you’re looking to bundle your home phone, broadband and digital TV services.

You can have a phone line installed by Sky (www.sky.com) for just £39. Line rental from Sky is cheaper than BT at just £12.25 a month, with paper billing at no extra cost. It’s important to note that Sky Talk is only available to customers who sign-up to Sky TV however, so this deal may only be worth it if you are also considering having Sky TV installed in your new home.

TalkTalk (www.talktalk.co.uk) also offers an attractive installation deal for both new customers and existing customers who are moving to a new house. If you already pay your line rental to TalkTalk in your old house, you can have a line installed at your new address for just £29.99. If you’ve not previously been a TalkTalk customer, the cost of line installation is £50. You can bundle both your home phone and broadband services with TalkTalk.

TalkTalk recommends signing up with them 14 days prior to moving in to your new property, to ensure that the line is installed and working - call 0800 049 1423 to arrange installation.

It is worth noting that if you do sign-up to a provider that offers its own phone network, such as Sky or TalkTalk, if you ever want to switch to another provider you may be liable to pay the connection fee charged by BT (currently £130).

The table below shows how the various line installation options compare:

Phone provider Provider details Line installation cost
BT www.bt.com Now £30 with BT broadband and calls (£130 with just calls package)
Direct Save Telecom www.directsavetelecom.co.uk £49.95 - Ring 0800 280 2021 quote "BBC01"
Post Office www.postoffice.co.uk £112.34
Primus Saver Primus review £59 - Ring 0800 036 0170 for more information
Sky www.sky.com Available on request - prices start from £39
TalkTalk www.talktalk.co.uk £50

BT line installation offer

While the information above outlines the alternatives to having a phone line installed by BT, you should not dismiss the telecommunications giant, as BT is currently offering free line installation for all new customers that take a triple-play package, bundling their home phone, broadband and digital TV.

It’s important you weigh-up the costs of both the installation and the calls package, as well as and decide which services are more important to you. If your digital TV service is your priority, then it may be as well to take all three services from Sky, or indeed Virgin Media, but if you’d rather not pay a monthly subscription for TV and are considering Freeview, then line installation and calls from another provider may be more cost-effective in the long term.

Moved into a new house and ordered Home Phone from Post Office over 9 weeks ago. Open Reach have now given 3 different dates to Post Office for line installation, each time 3 weeks later than the previous. A new pole needs to be installed first.

I now believe that BT are deliberately delaying things to future customers of other providers, in fact I am gathering evidence of this and Offcom will be told.

BT are supposed to treat all providers fairly and equally but they are not, and I now know that some of their engineers tell other customers lies in order to gain the business.

BT are a monopoly and a bloody disgrace to keep delaying with no valid reason.

Hi
I am trying to get a new line installed in a new build. It has a box installed by Open Reach. I have rung Talktalk as I would like to stay with my current provider. But after 4 days of various phone calls to Talktalk and many foriegn operators have told me they cannot provide my service or port my current number? I believe it is something to do with a code not being assigned to the address and it may take weeks/months for ?BT/Openreach (not sure which) to do. I am very frustrated as it was very simple when I moved home into a newbuild last time. I have spoken to BT and Talktalk at length and have tried to get a phone number for BT Open Reach to see if they can shed any light on it but to no avail!
Please can anyone help

I AM MOVING TO A NEW BUILD AND HAVING A NIGHTMARE AS ADDRESS DETAILS NOTING COMING UP ON ANY OF THE COMPANY'S COMPUTERS.
I'M WITH TALKTALK AT OLD ADDRESS AND THEY SAY THEY CAN'T HELP ME AT ALL UNTIL MY ADDRESS SHOWS ON THEIR COMPUTER WHICH TAKES ALONG TIME APPARENTLY.
BT SAY THEY CAN ONLY GIVE ME A PHONE LINE, NOT BROADBAND AT MOMENT SO INSTEAD OF FREE CONNECTION, I HAVE TO PAY £130 FOR JUST THE PHONE!!
STILL WAITING FOR POST OFFICE & SKY TO GET BACK TO ME TO SEE IF THEY CAN SUPPLY MY NEW ADDRESS.
AT WITS END, ALL I WANT IS UNLIMITED BROADBAND AND CALLS AT MY NEW ADDRESS WHICH IS ALREADY REGISTERED ON ROYAL MAIL WEBSITE.
CAN YOU HELP?

can you tell me whether i can switch to your landlne and broadband package 50mb while keeping my sky tv? - Jan 25 2011 12:18PM
I have moved in to a new home which has BT phone sockets already installed. However in order to get broadband either from Virgin or Sky - they both tell me that they are reliant on a BT engineer to connect the line to the exchange which is going to take over 1 month! Is there any way this process can be speeded up?

Thanks.
