If you tend to make the majority of your landline calls during the evening or at the weekend, you could benefit from switching to a call plan with unlimited evening and weekend calls. Most home phone providers - but not BT (www.bt.com) and Virgin Media - offer this call plan for free if you take monthly line rental with them.

Making calls during the day can be expensive if you’re not on the right call plan. Switching to a call plan that offers unlimited anytime calls will guarantee you won’t be hit with hefty daytime call rates.

It’s important to note that there will be a monthly charge for an anytime call plan. This could cost anything from £2 to £8, and will be added on top of your monthly line rental cost.

Cheap international call packages

If you regularly call friends or family overseas, it may be worth switching to a home phone provider that offers free or cheap calls to the countries you call the most. Take a look at your bills and work out how much you are spending on international calls, and then compare deals to see if another provider can offer better rates.

Look out for call plan add-ons too, such as TalkTalk’s (www.talktalk.co.uk) International Calls Boost, as these could help you save money on international calls.
