How Vonage works

It works just like a traditional phone service in that you use your existing touch tone phone to make phone calls from your home phone to other home phones or mobiles.

The main difference is that your phone is plugged into a Vonage adapter which is connected to your existing broadband router or modem - no headset required. Unlike other internet phone companies, the people you call don’t need either Vonage or broadband to receive calls from you, and your PC does not need to be switched on either. History of Vonage

  • 2001 – Vonage is founded and financing secured
  • 2002 – officially launches its service in the US and the first customer who signed up is still with Vonage today
  • 2003 – the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) platform is launched
  • 2004 – phone services are launched in Canada
  • 2005 – phone services are launched in the UK
  • 2006 – the Vonage V-Phone is introduced and 3 substantial VoIP patents are aquired
  • 2008 – over 1500+ people are employed by Vonage worldwide, with its customer base continuing to grow

Vonage awards

Vonage wins the "PC Magazine Editors’ Choice Award winner" in 2007, then in 2008 wins the "Best Consumer VoIP Highly Commended Award" recognising the contribution that Vonage has made in particular the company's commitment to value for money, service features and customer services and in 2009 becomes the ITSPA winner of the "Best Consumer VoIP" award.
