How do international phone companies work?
International phone companies can redirect your calls through their own networks in surprisingly simple ways. Once you sign up with them, you can use your BT line as normal – paying BT for the line rental and your new supplier for the calls. Some companies require you to dial a access number before your calls, which means you can use the new company for international calls and BT for local and national ones if you wish.
How do I pay for my calls?
You’ll be billed monthly or on a pay as you go basis. You can set up a direct debit to take care of the bill payments or top up your account in advance. Each supplier handles this differently, we have information on how each supplier will bill you.
Is VoIP the cheapest way to make international calls?
The main advantage of using VoIP is the cost. All calls to VoIP users are free and landline calls are usually free also, if not lower than other service providers’.
VoIP phone calls are made over your existing broadband connection and not through your regular phone line (or network) like most traditional phone companies such as BT or TalkTalk. By taking ordinary analogue signals and turning them into digital signals, it allows you to ring people using your broadband connection.
